7-Step Flexibility Solution Design Process:
Conduct a Flexibility Study
Analyse the facility to assess current flexibility levels and identify the flexibility required to meet future demands. This involves designing a robust study to evaluate how well the system can adapt to change.
Measure Actual vs Needed Flexibility
Develop quantifiable measures for both existing and required flexibility. Use this analysis to identify flexibility bottlenecks across operations, equipment, and scheduling.
Assess Potential Economic Benefits
Use the identified gaps between actual and required flexibility to estimate the economic benefits of flexibility improvements, particularly those that address operational bottlenecks.
Generate Concepts & Define Capital Constraints
If the potential benefits are significant, brainstorm innovative concepts and assess existing tools. Simultaneously, define financial boundaries for implementing flexible solutions.
Design the Flexible Solution
Develop a detailed solution within defined capital constraints. The design should specify required equipment, flexible tooling, integration methods, and the step-by-step implementation roadmap.
Perform Economic Analysis
Conduct a comprehensive economic justification for the selected flexible solution. Analyse its return on investment (ROI), payback period, and overall value contribution.
Prepare Management Proposal
Compile a formal proposal summarising the study, gap analysis, solution design, and economic justification for review and decision-making by executive leadership.
Strategy Implementation Feasibility
Strategies are assessed based on:
- Feasibility – Technical viability and alignment with operations
- Affordability – Initial and annual costs, and implementation time
- Organisational Readiness – Including top management support and change capability
- ROI Alignment – Ensuring a positive return on investment
